Pokemon Go 2018-12-10: Ramble-Log
Summary: Oops. Oops. OOPS! ...but Pokemon! feat. "sternly reminding myself that if I need bailing out twice in one day I'm gonna get strangled and deserve it".
I wanted to grab one more gym assault on my way home so I pulled up, taptaptap'd... and then realized everything was... getting quiet.
Yeah, I killed my battery and had to phone someone to give me a jump. All in the name of Pokemon. (I didn't even take the gym.)
Lesson learned! In my defense, while I'm aware that cold/running the headlights/running the heat/etc all drain car battery, I had no prior experience with "so how much is too much?". Now I know and will choose wisely going forward. (And yes, I'm quite confident the battery itself is good. I just really love my toasty personal Pokestops in -1C weather.)
ANYWAYS, eventually I returned home and it wheeled on to Walk O'Clock! For tonight I wanted to determine if the creek adjacent That @#$%ing Monument's (henceforth TFM's) road really is water biome– I snagged a Quilfish at the stoplight on my way out so it was particularly at the forefront of my wonderings. The last time I made that walk (...all of two days ago, wow, it feels far longer) I got two Poliwags out of it so it seemed possible.
I did approximately that route in reverse: out my neighborhood, uphill along the creek to TFM, then loop back through the neighborhood with the corner gyms. Good news: it seems the creek IS water biome! Sillier news: the creek is not drawn on the map; several nearby marshy holes/retaining ponds are. The creek is water biome but the retaining ponds are not. At least the one I checked isn't anyways. Not that I minded because checking was a good way to pad my distance slightly: it involved a long loop that started on my main path and returned to it.
Actually, full disclosure: I initially planned to visit TFM and then walk home the same way. But I had just so much energy when I reached it, I thought I'd check the retaining pond biome to pad my distance. All fine and dandy except halfway through that loop I glanced at the Nearby tracker and it informed me that there was a Torchic at one of the corner gyms.
I have never powerwalked ½ km uphill so enthusiastically before in my life.
I worried it'd despawn before I got there but I caught the Torchic! At that point I still had a surprising amount of energy but I looked down at my battery percent, grimaced, and finished the route normally. I'm offended that I came home before I was truly tired but not like I had much choice without my battery pack. (That'll teach me!)
For those counting, the 0.5 "oops" was that finishing the route entailed walking on an unlit microshoulder road in the dark with trees forcing me out onto the asphault. It wasn't particularly busy but heeeegh that's not ideal. I really prefer at least some sidewalk OR a streetlight, I'm not picky, just give me something. (@#$%ing 1960s neighborhoods, why must they approach sidewalks as if the lack of them is the only thing keeping them from being raided by burgular-vikings 24/7.)
But I made it home in one piece without having to phone someone for a ride. Success!
Today's Walk: 4km, 1hr 15min
Weather Conditions: clear, dry, hint of breeze, definitely below freezing
Caught: Qwilfish, Spheal, Carvanha, Staryu, Torchic
Hatched: Magby, Wynaut
Oops Counter: 1.5
Let me just get this out of the way: I went grocery shopping today. The plethora of 'stops and gyms spread around that shopping center are obnoxiously far apart so I kept driving over and idling with the engine/lights on while I taptaptap'd before moving on to the next one.Weather Conditions: clear, dry, hint of breeze, definitely below freezing
