I have mixed feelings.

My biggest, nearly only regret is I'm back to needing reasons to go for walks. The exercise was lovely and there's no good way (yet) to replicate the "if I go outside I get paid in POKEMON!!" motivation. To a lesser extent I feel the smallest (irrational) pang of letting people down since everyone was so kind to my newbie self, and now I've wandered off.

But it's FREEING to have all that time back! I have so many more hours in a day now that I don't have to juggle "how will I Tetris my daily 'stop spin into my schedule, or do I need to make a day out of collecting quests, or should I work on hoarding event candy, or" and so on. This also means I don't have to waste brain space on what a buggy flustercluck the game is, nor be trampled on all sides by desperation, by the sensation that I'm behind and need to race just to catch up. No more irritation that my shiny luck sucks, that I can't get XYZ without doing the unreasonable ABC... and I never have to jump through hoops to check IVs and levels again!!

Oh, right, I should mention:
The thing that took me "from I'm having a good time!" to "I'm done." was the Adventure Sync system breaking. I didn't get credit for multiple walks. That's it, that was the one thing keeping me interested, and with it gone: *fart noise.*

Not sure what my plan is from here. Maybe make myself a fake walking game with a spreadsheet, manually awarding myself pretend Pokemon stuff for my walks (since the app to track my walks still works just fine, and I do like using that.)

Friday the 11th:
Caught: Pidgeotto
Hatched: Stunky
The day's heartbreak was missing a Finneon by thirty seconds. Boo! But new hatches are new hatches, and a Pidgeotto for pokedex that cost me 0 candy was VERY welcome.

Saturday the 12th, Totodile Community Day:
SHINY: Totodile x4, Makuhita
Caught: T O T O D I L E S, Haunter(?!)
Hatched: Feebas, Alolan Vulpix
Raid: Golem, Croconaw
Evolved: Feraligatr, Hariyama
My first meaningful Community Day! (Nevermind that I joined the game during the CD so big it was an entire weekend.) The forecast was bad but last-minute looked okay enough to permit hauling out to an indoor mall. The bad news: the @#$%ing mall doesn't have@#$%ing GPS reception for my @#$%ing carrier!! The good news: don't care, caught 110 Totodile anyways. The power of "walking outside" is not to be underestimated... even if it WAS cold as hell and I had some mild regretti when I couldn't feel my hands.

People were existed near! Fun was had! )

All in all I had a ton of fun today and I'm glad I went out. Now I just need to find somewhere with lots of stops and useful GPS reception for next Community Day.
wobblegong: Stylized blue fish with spots and stripes. (Default)
Summary: finally made it out to the park known to be a nest. IT WAS SO GOOD.
Walk: 6.3 km, 2hr 15min
Weather: sunny, WINDY (hello Windy weather boost), plenty of mud, cold

Caught: Goldeen, Wingull, Bronzo, Xatu
So the thing nobody told me was that this park is a pokestop central. )
wobblegong: Stylized blue fish with spots and stripes. (Default)
Caught: Lotad (31st), Croagunk, Remoraid, Skorupi (2nd), Mudkip (3rd), Parasect (5th), Corphish (8th), Kakuna (9th)
Hatched: Budew (2nd), Shuckle (5th),
Raid: Sandslash normal (5th)
Research: Starmie (8th), Tentacruel (9th)

As my Pokedex fills up I am steadily losing bragging fodder. Similarly, as I build a routine of places to haunt for stops/pokemon/whatever, I lose excuses to blather. Not that those are bad things! But it does look like my PGO "today I" dumps will dry up and vanish before long.

My actual playing continues unhindered. And Community Day might get me some tales.

Thursday the 27th:
Caught: Slowpoke
Daytime sunshine walk was subsequently followed by a chillier evening walk when I realized "this one egg is a hundred meters from hatching! >:C" That worked out quite well when I only went to the corner and back: Slowpoke was hanging out on said corner. (And yes, despite my GPS's best efforts I hatched the egg.)

Friday the 28th:
Caught: Nidorina, Spoink, Skarmory
Another day at the affluent strip mall! Mostly because I was desperate for gifts, but I did do a quick jog through the grocery store. Nidorina spawned directly atop my face; Spoink and Skarmory popped up where there was only moderate powerwalking to do, which was very generous of them.

Saturday the 29th:
Caught: Machop, Bagon
Hatched: Tyrogue
Nest: Wailmer
Another visit to my parents, this time with really good weather and more spare time! Props to the Bagon for spawning at the park three minutes after I left it, forcing me to about-face and powerwalk back when I had been standing on the doorstep to go back inside.

I later took the opportunity to visit an even bigger park which was confirmed by the Silph Road to be a nest.
I did not look up the current nesting pokemon beforehand.
I figured out which it was pretty quickly.

Intellectually I understand how PGO nests mechanically work, etc etc, but it's still HILARIOUS to roll up to a park whose features are muddy slopes and grey-hibernating plants to find........ whales. Whales on the trails, whales by the buildings, whales in the parkling lot, WHALES WHALES WHALES. 1/8th of the way to a Wailord now!
wobblegong: Stylized blue fish with spots and stripes. (Default)
Raids: Dewgong, Shinx
Caught: Venomoth

Turns out I can solo tier 2 raids if it's something I have a lot of decent counters for– it's partially luck, but somehow I have a lot of double-Electric pokemon on the less-bad end of my CP range. I more or less spammed attacks until Dewgong flopped over– despite some team woes. I don't know why I slotted Ho-oh at the start of the team but it meant every fainting resulted in its flappy red peacock ass popping back out and necessitating some frantic swapping, given that it wasn't dying very fast but it also wasn't wearing Dewgong down.

Shinx was a cakewalk. I don't think anything fainted at all.

Venomoth was found hanging out on the side of the road as we drove home from tonight's unrelated-to-PGO thing (while I rode as passenger). I have no idea how it managed to load or why it was there, but it got in the ball and I'm thrilled. It salves the burn of seeing multiple shadows on radar too distant to visit for even a spin.

As a counterpoint, I tried Alolan Raichu yesterday and got thrashed. I think it was over 40% hp when the timer ran out. So despite the nerd elite rating them as very soloable I'm going to stick to tier 1 & 2 for now. Not that I mind: Alolan Exeggutor & Mawile would both be welcome additions to my Pokedex, and Shinx/Buizel/Magikarp would be candy for future evolutions.
wobblegong: Stylized blue fish with spots and stripes. (Default)
Previously caught while not blogging about it: Zapdos
Caught: Onix
Evolved: Butterfree, Raichu, Primeape, Arcanine, Jolteon, Dragonair, Furret, Skiploom, Jumpluff, Piloswine, Silcoon, Cascoon, Nuzleaf, Loudred, Swalot, Camerupt, Glalie, Sealeo, Walrein, Abomasnow
The "double candy for all catches/transfers" ended this afternoon. I'd meant to take advantage of it earlier in the week but the weather was Bad™ and I kept having to adult. So today I rolled out of bed, did a perfunctory amount of Adulting, and then scampered off to the Rich People Strip Mall.

I didn't get my transfers done before rollover so I missed out on a little more candy. But I caught MANY things, harassed a multitude of gyms, spun enough stops to send gifts to everyone + refill to 10 AND did a little bonus exploring. Fave find: a gym tucked way the heck back in a manufacturing/shipping park, controlled by two Team Blue dudes who had been in there almost two days. Going to assume that one doesn't get much traffic, at least on the weekend. >_>

Tonight's desk-based adventure was assessing the pile of new captures to chuck as many as I could. I was also feeling feisty... so I popped a Lucky Egg and blasted through evolutions both for its own sake (I have a shiny Raichu now, much better than shiny Pikachu) and also to advance some quests. I moved up a stage of both A Mythical Discovery & A Ripple In Time. (Let's GO, Meltan is unlikely to advance before the winter event ends on account of how do you expect me to catch Slugma/Gulpin when I'm up to my nipples in winter spawns!!)
wobblegong: Stylized blue fish with spots and stripes. (Default)
Walk: 5.9km, 1hr 30min
Weather: clear, light mud, ~0-7°C

Caught: Girafarig
Hatched: Munchlax, Elekid, Pichu in a santa hat
My initial plan was to head to the Rich People Strip Mall and spin the array of stops/gyms like a slot machine, but I got distracted by the raid crew and ended up driving through Peak Rush Hour Bullshit to feed Heatran all my golden razz berries. It didn't get in the ball. >:(

Upside of the terrible traffic: PGO decided I'd walked that distance and gave me distance credit. S-so many eggs...

For my evening walk I tried leaving Go 100% off and using only my walky-tracker.
I hatched 8 eggs from that walk alone.
I'll take it.
wobblegong: Stylized blue fish with spots and stripes. (Default)
Walk: 6 km, 1hr 50min
Weather: clear, medium mud, ~0-5°C

Caught: Tangela, Swinub, Magnemite, Cacnea; Snover, Castform (Sun), santa-hat Pika, Stantler, Delibird, Sneasel, Jynx
Hatched: Piplup
Raids: Drifloon
Evolved: Muk

I heard the good word that event 1/day free incubators started early so today I got out and went ADVENTURIN': I drove to every place I vaguely knew had some 'stops or gyms, poking around to figure out where they were. Some turned out to be HILARIOUSLY inaccessible; others revealed interesting locales! Most importantly they gave me heaps of pokeballs.

Right as I finished up my grocery shopping the clock ticked over to Festivus o'Clock and I drowned in behatted Pikachu. More interesting by far are the plentiful Snover, Spheal and Sneasel! I'm excited to see how many candies I can get for those three because I would love to evolve a few.

My only regret is the FESTIVUS TIDE of spawns are drowning out the common things I low-key really wanted candy for. Skiploom/Jumpluff will wait, apparently.

Summary: adventures in exploring more of the nearby roads! This was also the first long walk that happened during daylight.
Walk: 6.5 km, 1hr 45min

Caught: Scyther (x2!)
Hatched: Togepi, Pichu
Kudos to the egg from Austria: I got Togepi! )

Caught: Cubone, Exeggcute, Wailmer, Slakoth
For wholly unrelated-to-pokemon reasons I visited my parents. The area turned out to be RIPE with the good stuff! So many gyms and stops! The park was a nest (not sure what of, probably Cubone since I caught two?) and the swimming pool was a gym across from another gym and–

Did I mention it was pouring rain, the park was flooded, and by the time I got back to my parents' house everything waist-down was soaked so badly it needed an hour in the dryer?
Oh, and I dragged my baby bro & my darling around with me for all of this.
They don't even play.

I am the worst. It is me.
(Next time... either it stays "a quick trip to the park" or I leave my long-suffering loved ones home.)

Thursday the 13th:
Caught: Pinsir, Meditite, Omanyte, Ponyta; Sableye, Horsea, Delcatty, Krabby, Electabuzz
Hatched: Alolan Meowth, Alolan Diglett
Research: Magmar, Entei
I spent the first half of the day at a strip mall I hadn't checked out yet, the local Expensive Rich People habitat. LOADS of 'stops and gyms and pokemon there! I also took a (much better exercise feat. no benches) walk at night where, yet again, I got played by the Nearby tracker. All that hustling 1km uphill must be doing great things for my thighs....

The post-walk hours were spent Appraising and transferring all my spare pokemon so I have something resembling room again.

Friday the 14th:
Caught: Ditto!, Wheezing
AAH I GOT DITTO! A random Zigzagoon that wasn't even hard to catch revealed itself to be Old Man Jenkins my first Ditto, permitting me to advance my Meltan quest to the next step. Only did a brief walk to the corner gyms so I could pick up a daily research and leave a defender (only one, the other gym was 6/6 >:C ) but curiously there was another Electabuzz at the same spot where there was one last ni– oh @#$%ing, is that a nest over there, is that what that is.

In honor of my hours spent sorting and transferring pokemon, today Nyan-tech announced the December holiday will include half a week of bonus candy for catching/transferring.
...
Well fine! I'll just resume hoarding until the 18th. >:C

Official announcement post [HERE].

So a Feature™ of Pokemon Go is that I routinely end up with 17 duplicates of a pokemon I really only need one or two of. I have some interest in winnowing the pile based on their stats: keep the ones with good IVs, toss the rest. But while it's possible to calculate IVs, it requires third-party websites or apps, and I just want to know which are the worst 70% of my whatevers without deep-diving their stats.

Conveniently, the game includes an Appraise feature! Even more conveniently, the "answers" strike a nice balance of informative vs efficient, with only four possibilities each for two dimensions. So from best to worst I assigned the answers S-grade, A-grade, B-grade and X-grade. After using Appraise I set the pokemon's nickname to two letters: "sa" would indicate the first "answer" was S-grade and the second was A-grade. "xb" would indicate the first "answer" was X-grade and the second was B-grade. And so on.

It makes it very easy to clean up my pokemon from the list view when I can approximate their IVs at a glance. And if I'm tracking something else (desired gender, moveset, etc) I have plenty of nickname space to note that down too. :) Now I just have to Appraise and clean up... 400 pokemon. *wheeze*

Walk: none, today was a rest day.
Weather: overcast, the winter version of humid, a whole 5°C (wao)

Caught: Seviper, Metapod

My legs/feet were still feeling a bit put upon so I drove all over creation hitting known 'stops/gyms today. I cleaned out and took three gyms (two defenders came back already, boo) and spun everything I could get my hands on. Now I have enough pokeballs to accomplish something, woohoo! I was also happy to pick up some researches although right now I'm juggling one that might take me more than a day & one that is outright dicey. But per The Chart™ (imgur link) they give me encounters with Magmar and Porygon respectively, so I'm going to try!

Dark shout-out to the Kohls front entrance for being CARPETED in pokemon, I'm talking 11 on screen at once as I coasted by it. What is going on over there.

Let me just get this out of the way: I went grocery shopping today. The plethora of 'stops and gyms spread around that shopping center are obnoxiously far apart so I kept driving over and idling with the engine/lights on while I taptaptap'd before moving on to the next one.

I wanted to grab one more gym assault on my way home so I pulled up, taptaptap'd... and then realized everything was... getting quiet.

Yeah, I killed my battery and had to phone someone to give me a jump. All in the name of Pokemon. (I didn't even take the gym.) )
