Summary: conquered a gym, left pals in another two, succeeded at a raid for the first time! THEN I went for my long catch-happy walk.
Then I hauled over to a choice section of strip map (four stops and a gym!) and roamed back and forth for awhile. Eventually the gym htached into a Houndour... a tier five Houndour... I gave it a go, got absolutely thrashed, and decided that was fine. "But I have just enough time to visit the corner gyms on my way home to spin them again...!"
When I got there, my preferred gym was about to hatch, so I lingered that much longer. Tier one Snorunt! It... was comically easy, despite my lack of Fire types (living the rock/fighting dream in my neighborhood instead). And then it got in the Pokeball. Yay!
The upshot of cycling between Pokestops for way too long was I was laden with Pokeballs at that point, so for tonight's walk I resumed gleefully catching everything. EVERYTHIIIIING. ...until most of the way through when I was getting very, very low. Of course it was only JUST before getting home that things I yet lacked popped up on the Nearby tracker. Still no Shroomish, *shakes a fist at the sky* but Nidoran-F and Chinchou are among my list of beloveds. Particularly the Nidoran. :D
The walk was largely uneventful but I wiggled over to another few roads I hadn't tested for Pokemon yet. Results were... not ideal. It looked like the residential cul-de-sacs probably have good density, but I was checking along the main artery and that wasn't quite in range. Also checked an unrelated one-off cul-de-sac and it sucked, but that's what I expected.

It was COLD and I "had no obligations today" (read: didn't have convenient activities to double-dip with PGO) so my pre-dusk time ended up spent on a Pokestop drive. Gyms on the corner: conquered, inhabited, fed, spun– turns out if you do stuff at one gym often enough you upgrade your badge for it, nice!
