Summary: I tried out raiding with strangers for the first time. It worked out well and I can deem Ho-oh/Lugia weekend a success!
Two nights ago I decided I really did want to participate in raids at some point. I poked around awhile, found some Discord servers themed around the local area to join, and lurked a bit. When I got up and online this morning the localest one was hoppin' with people speaking an unholy combo of Txting + player lingo to coordinate wheres and whens. I squandered an hour being nervous but eventually they named a place I could find. Off I went! There was some extra waiting (because they had split the party) but one of the raiders rolled their window down and checked in with me when they realized the person they were idling beside was in fact the newbie who'd piped up with "do I need to do anything fancy/extra?" They were very nice and I felt pleasantly welcome. :)
That said the actual raids were, ah... not relying on my personal success. I did my best; my best was nothing compared to roving gangs of six Tyranitar. But I got a pat on the head and a handfull of premier balls anyways so woo! Even more happily, I caught two out of three and that gave me one of each legendary. YAY!
And as soon as the third one was done I sped home because I'd transmuted all my nervousness into pee and then held it for an hour.
And then as soon as I'd pulled my pants back up I was alerted to a Breloom at T.F.M. and jumped back in the car to go catch it.
Since I was already on the road I decided to indulge in some relaxing faffing about after the earlier adrenaline rush of raids (which, to be clear, are NOT that exciting, I just have an overtuned nervous system). Went back to the rich peoples' strip mall and coup d'état'd my battery walking up and down the small, juicy stretch of Nothing But Stops/Gyms. Despite the cold and misting of rain it was quite pleasant... not the least because the pretense of rain meant Rain Weather meant a bonanza of water-types for my collection.
Caught: Pineco, Breloom!!, Buizel, Wooper, Chansey
Raids: Ho-oh, Lugia
Research: Porygon
I am wretchedly grateful that it seems the local PGO raiding players use Discord. Faffing about to get it going on my phone was a small price to pay.Raids: Ho-oh, Lugia
