Good news about my proof-of-concept: I have been walking VERY regularly now that my little pokemon walking-game exists in proto form.
And after a week of lying around and wishing a random encounter table would build itself, I capitulated and spent the evening banging away at one.
It is in the state where I can make continuous forward progress (and indeed is entirely usable! if all I wanted was a functional thing, by jove in functions!) but I have a lot of really deep uncertainties about how I chose to build a few bits and it's causing a lot of angst, because other moving parts need a solid foundation to rest on and heeeegh I might have to rebuild those and they're already a bunch of deeply annoying work, having to redo it later would be Effort. And so on.
Incidentally, this more or less let me finish another piece of the game which was related to it (hooray, a pokedex!) so I should probably spend some time patting myself on the back for that instead of stressing about the variety of design decisions I still need to make. (Tunnel-visioning on the sucky bits and never enjoying the Good Job! endorphins is dysfunctional and we know better by now, self.)
